A Story of Transformation: Angely Nahomy, a Voice Inspiring Others to Break the Silence

Un Mundo, Honduras

Since the age of 10, Angely Nahomy has been part of Un Mundo’s programs. Back then, she was a shy, quiet, and reserved girl—someone who listened more than she spoke. Today, at 17, she has become a confident, brave, and determined young leader, ready to speak up for the girls and women who still don’t feel able to.

She grew up in a home shaped by family violence—a reality many girls endure in silence. But the learning spaces Un Mundo provided transformed how she saw herself and the world around her.

Nahomy learned that she has rights, that self-love can be a shield, and that breaking cycles of violence is possible. With courage, she began talking to her mother about her rights, encouraging her not to accept abuse any longer.

She also confronted her father—not with resentment, but with the hope of turning her home into a place rooted in respect and love. That seed of change took hold. Today, peace and joy are part of everyday life in Nahomy’s home. Her father is a different man, and her mother—inspired by her daughter—has joined Un Mundo’s team as a community education facilitator, leading activities that strengthen children’s education and holistic development.

Nahomy’s leadership didn’t stop there. She was one of the young advocates behind the School Safeguarding Policy, an initiative that now protects and benefits more than 34,000 children in the municipality of La Ceiba by ensuring safe, violence-free school environments. Her story is a powerful testament to female empowerment—proof that a girl who grew up surrounded by fear and silence can become a guide and a beacon of hope for others.

In her community and throughout the Río Cangrejal Valley, Angely Nahomy is now a respected voice of leadership, resilience, and transformation. “There’s no age requirement to change the world,” Nahomy says with a smile. “You just have to believe in yourself—and have the courage to start at home.”
