New Sun Road – Guatemala
UNESCO officially recognized our partner New Sun Road as part of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development. The award highlights their initiative “Women at the Core: Digital Community Centers for Inclusive Innovation,” a program that expands access to clean energy, connectivity, and digital literacy in rural and indigenous communities across Guatemala.
This recognition honors the work the organization carries out in Mayan communities that have historically faced deep barriers to electricity, internet, and digital education — barriers that disproportionately affect indigenous women and rural youth.
The initiative strengthens 30 solar-powered Digital Community Centers, where communities access computers, digital training, leadership tools, and resources for education and entrepreneurship. Through Women’s Leadership Committees — responsible for managing and sustaining these centers — more than 5,000 indigenous women have directly participated in training and leadership programs. The broader impact goes even further: an estimated 150,000 people have benefited indirectly through access to renewable energy, connectivity, and community services.
