More Than Pipes: Planting Awareness in the Cangrejal River Basin

A pipe can carry water to a faucet. But only a community that understands, values, and cares for that resource can guarantee it keeps flowing for the generations ahead. That is the conviction guiding our partner Un Mundo’s work in the Cangrejal River Basin, where the construction of a clean water system for hundreds of rural families moves forward at the same pace as something perhaps harder to build: a culture of stewardship.

As the pipes are laid and the infrastructure takes shape, Un Mundo works in parallel with girls, boys, youth, and families through environmental education processes. They talk about the water cycle, caring for the watershed, and the responsible use of a resource that seems infinite but is not. And they do it in ways that reach the heart — one of the images that best captures this vision is children reading “Juanita la Gotita,” discovering that every drop counts and that they, too, can be guardians of their water source.

“Our dream has always been much bigger than building a system,” the team shares. “We know a pipe can bring water to a community, but only a conscious community can protect that water for the next generations.”

The system isn’t finished yet. There is still road ahead. But today, Un Mundo can say with pride that it is already building something even more important: the conviction that protecting water means protecting one’s own future.
