The National Palace of Culture — one of Guatemala’s most iconic landmarks — became the setting for something that doesn’t happen every day: hundreds of girls and boys gathered around science, listening to one of its most inspiring voices. Dr. Susana Arrechea, a Guatemalan scientist and godmother of SENACYT’s Science Clubs, delivered the keynote lecture “Energy, Science, and Opportunities for Communities,” at an event driven by Vice President Dr. Karin Herrera and her conviction that bringing science closer to citizens is a bet on the country’s development.
The same space welcomed researchers, university professors, and representatives from academic institutions, creating an intergenerational gathering where knowledge flowed in every direction.
The event centered on the role of energy, innovation, and science as generators of opportunity for communities — and reinforced a message growing more urgent every day: we need to cultivate a scientific culture starting at an early age.
Dr. Arrechea didn’t just present data or discoveries. She shared her story, her doubts, her process, and encouraged new generations to explore STEM fields with the certainty that science with purpose can transform lives.
