Chispa Project, Honduras
High in the mountains, near the border between Honduras and Guatemala, the César A. Cueva Elementary School proudly honors the legacy of the Chortí Mayan people. There, 13 teachers – even those who do not belong to the community – strive to learn Chorti words and pass them on to their students, thus preserving their ancestral language and culture.

Recognizing this exceptional commitment, Chispa Project joined this educational community in March to install its first school library, marking a before and after: for the first time, children have access to children’s books.
To celebrate, a book fair was organized, where students explored stories through interactive stations: they dramatized stories with handmade puppets, performed science experiments inspired by readings, played with narrative sequences and even experienced “snow” while reading about penguins.

Since then, the magic of reading has transformed the school. Library Day, celebrated every Monday, has become a favorite day, especially for the third graders, who have not missed a single one.
Some have discovered new passions: fairy tales, dinosaurs or cars. To commemorate Language Day, the little ones created 29 original stories from books and illustrations.
Their teacher notices the change: the children are more confident, expressive and enthusiastic about learning. The library has been the spark that ignited their curiosity and confidence.
At César A. Cueva School, a library is not just a room full of books. It is a space that transforms lives, reinforces identities and demonstrates that, as Chispa Project believes: Books can change history.
