Igniting the Spark of Reading Across Honduras

October 22, 2025

Chispa Project, Honduras

Chispa Project participated in the First National Meeting of Librarians in Honduras, a space for learning, collaboration, and recognition of the vital role of school libraries.

During the event, Ana Rocío Castillo, Associate Director of Chispa Project, led a talk titled “Reading and Poverty,” inviting participants to reflect on how reading can transform lives and open new opportunities. Librarians deeply connected with the message, reaffirming the value of their work in local communities.

Also highlighted was the participation of Amanda Ruiz, librarian at CEBG Manuel Bonilla in Santa Rosa de Copán, who shared the positive impact of her new Chispa Library on students.

In recognition of this ongoing effort, Chispa Project received a special distinction from the Honduran Ministry of Education for its contribution to strengthening education across the country.

One of the most heartwarming moments came with the “Chispa Passport” activity, where librarians visited the organization’s booth to collect stamps —a fun and engaging way to connect with the mission of Chispa Project.

By the end of the event, the team had distributed over 80 resource kits180 books, and received expressions of interest from more than 20 schools eager to establish their own Chispa Library.

In Ana Rocío Castillo’s words:

“School libraries are spaces of rights for children — they celebrate the essence of childhood.”
