Music and Smiles: A Partnership That Transforms Lives

There are moments in a child’s life that mark a clear before and after. For many of the young patients served by Operación Sonrisa Honduras (Operation Smile Honduras), one of those moments is the surgery that transforms their face and gives them back the ability to smile without pain. But recovery doesn’t end in the operating room. What comes after — confidence, self-esteem, a sense of belonging — also needs support.

That’s where Proyecto UREMU comes in. This year, the organization launched a new partnership with Operación Sonrisa Honduras to provide free music education to 10 children with cleft lip and palate who are part of their comprehensive care programs.

Through choir sessions, rhythm, musical expression, and violin classes, these children find a safe space where music is not just art — it is a tool for healing, confidence, and joy.

This partnership doesn’t come from nowhere. It rests on more than 10 years of work that UREMU has built with the support of partners like FCA, the Global Fund for Children, Asociación Música para Vivir, Fundación Napoleón J. Larach, and other supporters.

Today, the organization operates 11 music training centers in San Pedro Sula, La Lima, and Choloma, with more than 300 active students and over 1,000 direct beneficiaries. That solid foundation is what makes it possible to keep opening doors to new spaces and new stories.

At UREMU, they believe music can accompany key moments in a child’s life — offering confidence, joy, and hope. This partnership with Operación Sonrisa is exactly that: one more proof that when there is a strong support network, there is always room for a new smile.
