New Sun Road – Guatemala
From nearly 1,500 submissions from 147 countries, New Sun Road Guatemala’s Digital Community Centers project was selected as one of 15 global finalists in the Digital Inclusion category of the Digital@UNGA Awards 2026, driven by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
This international recognition highlights a model that goes far beyond installing a solar panel or connecting a community to the internet. The Digital Community Centers combine solar energy, connectivity, access to technology, and digital skills training to expand opportunities in rural and indigenous communities in Guatemala, placing women community leaders at the center of that transformation.
They are the ones who manage the centers, train their neighbors, and open doors to new educational, economic, and development opportunities.
The winning projects were announced on September 21, 2026, at United Nations headquarters in New York. This recognition reflects the impact that can be achieved when technology is truly placed at the service of communities.
