In Honduras, soccer has historically been a boys’ space. Not for lack of talent or interest among girls, but because of cultural, economic, and institutional barriers that have long restricted their access to sports.
Many public schools lack adequate equipment, there are few programs that actively promote girls’ participation, and stereotypes continue to carry weight. Our partner United Way Honduras decided to confront that reality head on.

“Niñas que Marcan: Leadership and Values On and Off the Field” was built on a clear conviction: when a girl steps onto the field, she doesn’t just learn to kick a ball. She builds self-esteem, learns teamwork, develops leadership, and creates positive connections with her community. Sports become a school for life.
With the support of partners like Grupo Puma, 417 soccer balls have been distributed to 36 public schools, creating real conditions for more girls to play.
But the initiative goes far beyond equipment. It also trains teachers and coaches in the “Football for Schools” app, equipping them with tools to implement sports activities with an educational, inclusive, and values-driven approach.
Because a ball without the right support to make the most of it only goes so far.
Every ball delivered carries a message: girls belong on the field, their participation matters, and sports can be the doorway to a future with more confidence, more opportunity, and more voice.
