Road accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the world, claiming 1.3 million lives each year. In Latin America, they account for 11% of that figure. Faced with this reality, United Way Honduras launched the Safe School Environments initiative in 2023, with the aim of creating safer school routes for children.

Using the international Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) methodology, the project identifies and manages road risks around schools, in partnership with the private sector and local governments.

In just three years, this initiative has benefited 2,808 students in seven schools in three municipalities, thanks to the support of partners such as 3M, Grupo Flores and Puma Energy.

The most recent achievement was the inauguration of a safe school environment at the John F. Kennedy Educational Center in Tegucigalpa on April 25.

United Way Honduras continues to promote the signage of school perimeters and to strengthen strategic alliances, convinced that road safety for children is a shared responsibility.
