In Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, rural communities are increasingly facing the effects of climate change: irregular rainfall, degraded soils, and food insecurity. In response to these challenges, Voces y Manos is leading the project “Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change through Youth Leadership and Agroecology,” promoting local, sustainable solutions driven by the community itself.

The initiative is being implemented in 11 communities and strengthens the livelihoods of 350 families by promoting agroecology as a viable alternative for producing healthy food, conserving natural resources, and increasing climate resilience. A key component of the project is the strengthening of 19 agroecological model plots, which serve as practical learning and demonstration spaces.

In these plots, farmers — including young leaders — implement practices such as producing organic fertilizers, diversifying crops, managing soil sustainably, and conserving native seeds. This knowledge is then replicated at the household and community levels, expanding its impact.

In addition, the project provides training and awareness-building processes for the 350 participating families, promoting practices that improve food security, reduce production costs, and strengthen community organization. The active participation of youth has been essential, positioning them as agents of change in addressing the territory’s climate challenges.

Through this comprehensive approach, Voces y Manos demonstrates that investing in agroecology and youth leadership means investing in stronger, more sustainable communities that are better prepared for the future.
