Learning in a Safe School: Innovative Disaster Risk Prevention in Western Guatemala

Tierra Nueva – Guatemala

At Tierra Nueva, there is a strong belief: when children lead prevention efforts, fear turns into action, and vulnerability becomes a shield for the entire community. Guided by this conviction, our partner continues to strengthen “Aprendo en una Escuela Segura” (Learning in a Safe School) as a benchmark for resilience and community adaptation in western Guatemala.

Now in its second year of implementation, this initiative — rooted in the Socio-Environmental Empowerment framework — is redefining school safety by embedding disaster risk management directly into the educational fabric of communities. In a region shaped by significant socioeconomic and political challenges, the project represents a genuinely innovative approach.

The methodology moves beyond passive, theory-based training to make children the primary agents of change. Through participatory, activity-based learning; technical safety signage; collaborative design of School Safety Plans; and the formation of School Disaster Risk Management Committees, technical knowledge is being decentralized and placed in the hands of those who live in these communities.

The goal goes beyond physical infrastructure: to transform schools into centers of community resilience, where every student, teacher, and family is equipped to respond to potential risks. Investing in this kind of education not only protects the present — it is the strongest foundation for long-term sustainable development.
