School Leaders Need to Be Cared for Too

Behind every school that works well, there is a person making it possible: the principal who arrives first, solves what no one else can, holds the teaching team together, attends to families, and keeps everything running — often without anyone asking how they’re doing. Educational leadership carries enormous responsibility, and yet spaces to care for those who lead are rare.

Asociación CasaSito is changing that. As part of a network of 5 organizations implementing Global School Leaders’ (GSL) Leadership Amplifiers in Guatemala, CasaSito accompanies principals from 15 schools in a process that is not only about school management. It is about purposeful leadership, personal well-being, and communities that sustain each other.

Through 8 workshops, the principals receive tools to inspire their teams, lead with greater clarity, and generate lasting impact. But also — and this is what sets the program apart — they have space to talk about themselves. To recognize their own strengths.

To let go of what they’ve been carrying in silence. For many, the individual coaching sessions are the first time anyone has genuinely asked how they are doing.

“The coaching session was liberating. It allowed me to reconnect with myself and recognize everything I need to let go of,” shares one participant.

Within schools, the program also fosters communities of practice where teachers support one another and build solutions together. Because a leader who feels supported can support others better. And a school where everyone cares and is cared for is the kind of community that can transform the future of its students.
