Early Stimulation: Small Steps That Open Big Doors

ADISA – Guatemala

At ADISA, the belief is simple: development starts in the earliest years of life, and every small milestone can make a lasting difference. That’s why our partner runs an early stimulation program for children ages 0 to 6, with the goal of supporting healthy development and improving opportunities for integration into family, school, and community life.

Today, more than 40 children — with and without disabilities — actively participate in this learning and support space. Sessions of 45 minutes to one hour are tailored to each child’s pace. Through sensory, cognitive, and physical activities — using materials like paint, rice, sand, and various textures — the children explore the world around them, discover new abilities, and develop naturally.

The program also actively involves mothers, fathers, and caregivers, who accompany the process and continue activities at home, reinforcing progress throughout the week. The results show up in meaningful ways: in communication, social interaction, and everyday development. Some children who arrived without any speech have started saying their first words; others have learned to follow instructions and engage with peers with greater confidence.

One mother shares her experience: “My son didn’t talk — he didn’t say a single word. Now he’s started talking, started doing things he couldn’t do before. He plays with other children now, and he’s been able to touch water and dirt — textures he used to hate.” — Cecilia Dominga

Through play, family involvement, and professional support, the program creates a warm environment where every child moves forward at their own pace, building small victories that grow into greater confidence and independence.
