Comunicándonos – El Salvador
On May 6, our partner Fundación Comunicándonos presented its latest book — “El florecer de los tulipanes. Memoria, verdad y justicia 44 años después del asesinato de los periodistas holandeses en El Salvador” (The Blossoming of the Tulips: Memory, Truth, and Justice 44 Years After the Murder of the Dutch Journalists in El Salvador) — to students from the first through fifth years of the Journalism program at the University of El Salvador.

The book examines the case of four Dutch journalists murdered in El Salvador during the armed conflict, a case described by UNESCO as “a paradigmatic example of a violation of freedom of expression.” The publication traces the long road toward truth and justice, and its legacy continues to remind us that reporting should never cost a life.
During the academic event, participants emphasized the importance of equipping new generations of journalists with the history of these events — encouraging them to reflect on the risks of the profession and deepen their commitment to human rights and press freedom. Daniela Melgar, a fourth-year Journalism student, shared that the book carries an important message about the need not to forget, and to value freedom of expression.
“El florecer de los tulipanes” is the foundation’s second publication on this case, bringing together testimonies, analysis, and reflection to affirm that sustainable reconciliation cannot exist without truth and justice. This documentation takes on even greater urgency today: according to the latest Reporters Without Borders rankings, El Salvador has experienced sustained deterioration in press freedom, and the 2026 World Press Freedom Index places the country at 143rd out of 180 nations — deepening the decline recorded the previous year.
